Winter Essentials for Your Car
Winter Essentials for Your Car

Winter is here and so are the dangers of driving through unpredictable weather! Cold and slippery conditions make accidents or breakdowns more likely to happen– but there are ways to prepare yourself and your vehicle for some of the worst case scenarios.

1. Store Multiple Blankets

  • Wrapping yourself in blankets is the quickest and easiest way to keep warm and is ideal to have thicker blankets to provide extra warmth.

2. Pack Gloves, Hats and Extra Sweatshirts

  • When the cold begins to take over, usually your fingers and toes are the first to go numb. By wearing gloves and warm socks, this can be prevented.
  • Keeping your head warm is crucial. When your head is cold, the blood flowing through the rest of your body gets cold as well decreasing your overall body temperature. The more layers, the better!

3. Keep Hand and Foot Warmers Available

  • Although having gloves and socks may keep your hands and feet warm, depending on how cold the temperature is, that may not last. Having hand and foot warmers will provide extra heat. Use these tactfully as quantity may be limited.

4. Have Water On Hand

  • If, by chance you are stranded for days, you can only go so long without water. The average human can go about three days without water, but depending on the person this number can be lower. Becoming dehydrated is not something you want happening while stranded.

5. Set Aside A Flashlight with Working Batteries

  • Flashlights are important for multiple reasons. One, to signal for help as well as allowing others to locate you. Two, if you are attempting to find help or check your local surroundings, a flashlight can help guide you and prevent you from getting lost.

6. Keep A Portable Phone Charger Ready

  • Carrying a portable phone charger with you may be the most important item on this list. If you are stranded somewhere far from any population, your phone may be the only way of getting in contact with someone. Having your phone die is the last thing you want!

7. Stowe A Shovel and An Ice Scraper

  • If your car is stuck in the snow, you may be able to shovel your way out and get back on track. If your windows ice over, it may be very difficult to see while driving, putting yourself and others at risk. Keeping an ice scraper to have a clear view is necessary.

Stay safe this winter by following these 7 steps and preparing your vehicle in case of an accident or breakdown. For any questions or concerns, call 860-584-6400.
